Competitive running met competitive eating in the inaugural Tuscaloosa Krispy Kreme Challenge on a chilly February morning. The challenge: run 1 mile, eat 12 doughnuts, run another mile.

I really enjoy running and sign up to run races here and there. This challenge caught my attention for being so outrageous of a concept. I wasn't alone as 400+ other runners felt compelled to take on this challenge as well! When asked about taking challenge, my response was absolutely! There was an option to not eat all those doughnuts and enter as casual competitor. I like doughnuts, and thought how hard could it be to speed eat 12? Bring on the challenge!

Are you up for the challenge? That was the question for me (left) and Monk (from our sister station).

Fast forward to race day!

After running a mile, it is doughnut time!

Looking back, I started the eating way too slow as if it was an ordinary day at the station. No, this was a race. After three doughnuts, the full feeling kicked in. It's time to go to plan b, start packing doughnuts together like a pancake. Still having problems as I rolled the remaining doughnuts into a ball trying to push out any air. Anything to lessen the load. All the while not allowing myself to throw up. It was so tough trying to swallow, as the taste went from good to help me no more! A part of my inspiration was in the conversation with others around me as we joked and laughed about the experience. Big Al even came by to sit down with us. Roll Tide!

In the end, I found a way to complete the challenge.

An unforgettable experience, to say the least. From what I saw and heard, everyone really enjoyed this inaugural event in Tuscaloosa! Race entry money raised benefits two outstanding hometown groups, Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama and The Y!

The next challenge, the inaugural Tuscaloosa Half Marathon on March 2nd!
