This Flashback Friday is on '1979,' not the year, the song from Smashing Pumpkins. The song about coming age was released in January 1996 off the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

'1979' serves as the group's highest charting song peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a powerhouse all over Alternative radio too where it peaked at number one on the Modern Rock Chart! The song's popularity would earn it Grammy nominations (including Record of the Year) and a MTV 'Moonman' for Best Alternative Video of the Year. Take a look at the video below!

1996, the year of the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The centerpiece of events is now Turner Field and home of the Atlanta Braves. At least for now, as the Braves owners are ready to move the team north of the city. I still don't quite get that. Also, in 96, the spy movie 'Mission Impossible' starring Tom Cruise hit the big screen. I like James Bond flicks, so this falls right into that type of action plot. Apparently, others liked it too! As, sequels 'Mission Impossible II, III and Ghost Protocol' would follow. And, look out, a fifth installment with Tom Cruise is in the works!
