We're turning up the summer heat this B101.7 Flashback Friday with the spotlight on Fatboy Slim and the 1998 hit, 'The Rockafella Skank.'

This song doesn't have many lyrics, but paired with infections and driving ear candy beats, it works perfectly! 'Right about now, the funk soul brother. Check it out now, the funk soul brother.' That's basically it for lyrics. If you didn't know the song, you'd probably be ready to walk away. But, the masterpiece of samples is really what makes this record.

The samples according to a listing on Wikipedia includes:

  • 'Sliced Tomatoes' by the band Just Brothers (a popular Northern Soul track).
  • Bobby Fuller's 'I Fought the Law (and the Law Won)'
  • 'Beat Girl' by John Barry and his Orchestra.
  • A guitar line from the song 'Peter Gunn' by Art of Noise featuring Duane Eddy.

Joking about the royalties that had to be paid to release song, Fatboy Slim claimed it left basically nothing for royalties for himself.

Happy Friday and turn it up!
