Bryant Holds On During Homecoming
In a special Thursday edition of "Friday Night Lights," the Paul W.Bryant High School Stampede defeated the Brookwood Panthers by a score of 33-23.
While Brookwood barely led in scoring during the game, the Panthers kept their opponents on their toes and never quit. Even after falling behind to a 13-point deficit in the first quarter, Brookwood fought themselves back into the matchup with 16 points from the offense in the second quarter.
Initially, the second half looked promising for the visiting Panthers. Their defense accounted for a sack on Bryant's third-quarter-opening drive and the offense capitalized in their first possession of the half, making the score 23-19 for Brookwood with 3:20 left in the third quarter.
However, this would be the Panther's last points for the night as the Bryant High School offence took over for the rest of their evening at home. After the Panthers' final score, the Bryant Stampede accounted for three game-sealing touchdowns in the final 16 minutes of play.
A bright spot for the Brookwood Panthers has to be the offensive production of sophomore running back, CJ Cummins. The Brookwood workhorse rushed for a total of 145 yards from 28 carries, including two touchdowns.
For the Bryant Stampede, their offense put on a show through the air as well as in their running game and managed to only allow one turnover for the evening. Even though the Stampede came away with a fairly dominant win, a large takeaway from the outing for Bryant was the number of penalties the home team committed. For the evening, Bryant lost a total of 127 yards from 14 penalties called against them.
The Paul W. Bryant Stampede move to 4-4 on the campaign and take on the one-loss Hillcrest Patriots on the road next week.
For Brookwood, the difficult season now has the Panthers at a record of 1-6 as they get ready for another road game, next week, against a fellow one-win team in the Bessemer City Purple Tigers.
