September 11, 2001: Where Were You?
Today marks the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and although more than a decade has passed since that dark day, its memory remains fresh in our minds. Where were you when you first heard of the attacks? Share your memories with us.
Here's my story: I was a senior in high school, and I had taken a sick day. My father was on his way to pick me up from my mom's house when I received a phone call that made my stomach turn.
My dad had been in an accident. He had run off the road, and his car was overturned in a ditch. I remember driving out to the scene and being relieved to find that he was okay. I then drove to the doctor's office, my parents promising to meet me there.
I was listening to the local rock station. One of the DJ's interrupted a song. I remember his voice seemed to waiver as he relayed the news that an airplane had just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. That was all he knew at this point. Maybe it was some sort of awful accident. He promised another update soon, and then... commercials.
By then, I'd made my way to the doctor's office. My parents and I sat completely still in that waiting room, watching the TV in disbelief. Frozen in shock. Sick with fear.
I was 17 years old at the time, but I remember leaning on my mother's shoulder and crying. Crying because I was scared. Crying because I was confused. Crying because I honestly didn't know what else to do.
The remainder of the day was surreal. We stayed at home. It seemed as if everyone wanted to do the same, save for the long lines of people at the gas stations and grocery stores, all anticipating the worst.
Twelve years have passed since September 11, 2001. My heart aches for those who lost friends and family on that day. I still can't understand what motivates a human to carry out such unspeakable acts of hate and terror.
I cannot express enough gratitude to the first responders who placed their lives on the line that day and the men and women of our Armed Forces who selflessly and tirelessly sacrifice to protect our great nation.
