Long-Awaited Horror Indie ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter’ Gets Release Date, Photos
Osgood Perkins made his directorial debut this past October with the staid, eerie Netflix release I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, except not really. When attendees at the Toronto International Film Festival lined up to catch that film’s world premiere back in September, many were reminiscing about the proceedings one year earlier, where Perkins’ real directorial debut February screened. The horror indie made a positive impression on critics and landed a deal with boutique distributor A24, but floated around post-production purgatory for the entirety of 2016. But at last, parties intrigued by murmurs of this creepy festival standout will get their wish — the film since retitled The Blackcoat’s Daughter finally has a release date.
A new report from Entertainment Weekly reveals that March 31 will be the glorious day that Perkins’ long-time-coming freshman film will hit theaters, though DirecTV subscribers will have exclusive access to the film as early as February 16. As with I Am the Pretty Thing..., a mood of ambient horror and prim New England Gothic style animate The Blackcoat’s Daughter; in the film, a pair of girls (Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka and Sing Street’s Lucy Boynton) get left behind at their prep school for the winter break and start to observe strange and inexplicable phenomena in the ages-old building. All the while, a third girl (Emma Roberts) frantically hurries along the open road to the Bramford School, enigmatic purposes in tow.
Judging from the high praise out of initial festival screenings, the cast well-stocked with talented young starlets, and the unsettling promotional images that EW also premiered today, this will be one to mark down on the calendar. In all likelihood, this will be the last time an Osgood Perkins film spends a year sitting on the shelf.
