Under the new Alabama Accountability Act, the state's Department of Education must release a list of failing schools.

These schools are considered failing if they rank among the worst 6% of all public schools in Alabama measured by student test scores.

Currently, there are 75 failing public schools in Alabama. Montgomery County, Birmingham City, and Mobile County have the highest number of failing schools.

Bruce K. Craig Elementary School - 108 Craig Industrial Park, Selma, AL 36701, Bruce K. Craig Elementary School in Selma has less than 1% of students proficient in math, and only 15% are proficient in English.

Hemphill Elementary School - 714 12th Street SW, Birmingham, AL 35211, Hemphill Elementary School has 47% of students proficient in reading, the state average is 77%. In math, only 2% of students are proficient.

Chisholm Elementary School - 307 East Vandiver Boulevard, Montgomery, AL 36110, Chisholm Elementary School has 2% math,9% English, and 3% science proficiency. 44% of students perform at grade level in reading. The school also has a 14% suspension rate and a 24% absenteeism rate.

Capitol Heights Middle School - 116 Federal Drive, Montgomery, AL 36107, Capitol Heights Middle School has less than 1% of students proficient in math, and only 15% are proficient in English. The school has a suspension rate of 20% and an absenteeism rate of 22%.

Westlawn Middle School - 2430 Martin Luther King Junior Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, Westlawn Middle School has the lowest test scores. English proficiency is only 17%, Science proficiency is 9% and the math scores are the lowest, with only 1% proficiency. The school's suspension rate is 21%, and the absenteeism rate is 14%.

Parker High School - 400 Reverend Abraham L. Woods Jr. Boulevard, Birmingham, AL 35204, Parker High School in Birmingham has only 6% of students had proficiency in English, only 5% had proficiency in science, and only 2% in math. The school also has a 31% absenteeism rate.

Lee High School - 225 Ann St., Montgomery, AL 36107, Lee High School's college readiness rate is approximately half of the state average. The school has a suspension rate of 25% and a 32% absenteeism rate.

John L. LeFlore Magnet High School - 700 Donald St., Mobile, AL 36617, LeFlore Magnet High School in Mobile County has a Science proficiency of 10%, English 8%, and math is 2% The school also has a suspension rate of 32% and an absenteeism rate of 43%.
