Over the weekend, a new local race was born with the First Annual Tuscaloosa Marines Memorial 5K. Congrats to the organizers on a fine job, and the beginning of something with lots of potential for years to come!

The race events around the area give us a competitive challenge with others and to meet personal goals. Plus, it's an opportunity to support support worthy causes. The proceeds from this run go to USMC recruiting efforts and it serves as a fund raising kick-off for a Marine Memorial at the Tuscaloosa Veterans' Memorial Park.

I liked the flat Tuscaloosa Regional Airport 5K (3.1 miles) course for this race. Before you ask, no it wasn't on the runway. I had few people ask me that. Sure, that would pretty cool in one aspect, but a bit boring in another. Sure, it's a runway, but it would feel never ending with its straight endless feeling. Add in air traffic where you're running for your life, then that would be different. Otherwise, let's stick with turning down different roads and changing scenery.

Congratulations to the guys who put this race together on a job well done. They're planning on doing it again next year and are looking at ways to make it even bigger and better! Before you ask, that doesn't mean a runway course, dodging airplanes. Ha!

Here are a few photos I snapped from the morning.
