Whoa! My first reaction to flipping the TV here in the studio over to the Weather Channel. Look out, an all new graphics package and look was unveiled today. It is anything but subtle.

This isn't your grandpa's Weather Channel. Well, the new set rolled out today brings together super cool indigo blue with the paneling from grandpa's living room. It works.

I'm most impressed with the intensely different graphics scheme. The new maps are so simple, yet look modern. The appearance is soft and clean. The lettering is taller with a font which reminds me of my phone. The 'Local on the 8s' appears to be the greatest improvement area. It is what most people tune in to see. The new local segment really puts on a graphics showcase with plenty of eye candy and greater details, while keeping it clean and uncluttered. One thing I have noticed in the preview video, Boston is given as an example for the local forecast. In that forecast, local landmarks are seen in the background. Watching the Tuscaloosa forecast today, I saw a beach coastline. Is that Lake Tuscaloosa coast? It wasn't. Ten minutes later, it was a mountainous area. Could that be a view from scenic Skyland Boulevard? Um, maybe not. Overall, this weather geek is impressed!

President of The Weather Channel David Clark commented in a press release:

This is about simply tapping into the utter fascination we have for weather and the forces that shape this planet and bringing that to the forefront of everything we do. As the biggest weather geeks out there, it is totally natural for us to obsess over how weather stories of all kinds are presented and shared. We are investing in strengthening our role in the community of weather enthusiasts and in providing a deeper look into the awesomeness of weather and all the ways we’re connected to it – from the science behind it to the stories of the amazing people that best represent this passion.

Don't be surprised this becomes a trend with others in television. That is, if proven the public likes the look. Do you? Take a look at the promotional video created below.
