Bama Baseball Gets Combined No-Hitter
Justin Kamplain, Jay Shaw and Goeffrey Bramblett gave the Alabama Crimson Tide its first combined 9-inning no hitter since 1942 in a 7-0 win over Mississippi Valley State University today. In two games into the three game series with MVSU, Bama has yet to give up a run. After a rough outing last weekend against Louisiana, Bama beat Auburn on Wednesday in Montgomery (their first win ever there) before returning to Tuscaloosa for this weekend's series.
Kamplain was spectacular through 7 innings. The starter threw 12 strikeouts, setting a personal best, including 9 Ks in a row! While Bama fans surely wanted to see Kamplain attempt the no-hitter himself, Coach Mitch Gaspard wanted to give his ace a rest after throwing 98 pitches in the game. With conference play coming up, Gaspard wants his team in peak condition. Jay Shaw came in to relieve Kamplain in the top of the 8th inning. He added a 13th strikeout to Bama's numbers and kept MVSU off the board despite walking the first batter. Goeffrey Bramblett got the call in the 9th. After the first batter lined out to left field, he struck out the final two to send the crowd into a wild cheer. Alabama ended with 15 total strikeouts, and was only four batters over the total for a perfect game.
Offensively, Alabama continued their pace from yesterday. The Tide scored 7 runs, and Ben Moore got his first home run of the season. But the story here will be the pitching, which was by far the best outing by Alabama this season, regardless of opponent.
Bama finishes the series against MVSU tomorrow at 1:00 PM. They play Samford on Tuesday before starting SEC play with a three-game home series against the Kentucky Wildcats starting next Friday, March 14th.
