‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ ‘The Following,’ ‘New Girl’ and ‘The Mindy Project’ All Renewed at FOX
FOX fans, your time is at hand! While some renewals are more surprising than others, FOX has officially granted a second season to Andy Samberg's Golden Globe-winning 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' along with thirds for Kevin Bacon serial killer drama 'The Following' and Mindy Kaling's critically-adored 'The Mindy Project,' and a fourth season for Zooey Deschanel's ever-quirky 'New Girl.'
Of course, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' shouldn't surprise anyone, as its Golden Globe wins for both Samberg and the series itself essentially guaranteed a second season, in spite of relatively meager ratings. The cop comedy from 'Parks and Recreation' creators Mike Schur and Dan Goor also stars Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe lo Truglio, Chelsea Perreti, and Stephanie Beatriz.
'The Mindy Project' was seen to be somewhat more unlikely, as despite the series' critical following, Mindy Kaling's post-'Office' vehicle struggled with its tone early on, and still hasn't quite garnered the ratings to match its acclaim. 'New Girl' has something of the opposite problem, earning solid ratings on Tuesday nights, but absent the critical acclaim that marked the seasons building up to Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) getting together. It remains to be seen if the fourth season will include a series regular promotion for 'Happy Endings' star Damon Wayans Jr., who returned to the series after starring in the pilot, and was given an extensive guest option this year.
Finally 'The Following''s ratings made a third season equally likely to the second, though the Kevin Bacon-James Purefoy serial killer drama has been consistently dogged with criticism and derision for its storylines since early on. Says FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly of the renewals:
These shows are some of the best and acclaimed series on television, with influential, culture-driving stars, and some of the best, most creative talent behind the camera. All four are core assets within our 2014-15 portfolio of content, and we’re really happy to bring them back to our Fox fans for another season.
Well, what say you? Which of the four do you most think deserved their renewal, and which FOX series are you still waiting to hear about?
