“On a day where she was being face-guarded, nothing was easy and to be able to score 30-plus under those circumstances was unbelievable effort today,” said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. “[I am] just really proud of our team’s toughness and grit down the stretch.”
With SEC Tournament seeding on the line, the Tide knew a win today would be huge.
Alabama started the game off strong as Brittany Davis and Hannah Barber hit two three-pointers each in the opening frame, building a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Commodores opened the second quarter on a 10-3 run, tying the game at 23. Vanderbilt finished the quarter with a 6-0 run, taking a 33-30 lead into the break.
After falling behind early in the third quarter, 43-34, Davis scored 11 points in a row pulling the Tide within two, 48-46. The Tide outscored the Commodores 8-4 in the last two minutes of the quarter, taking a 54-52 lead into the final frame.
Both teams went back and forth to the start the fourth quarter, as the battle for the 11-seed was on the line.
Trailing by one, with 4:45 left in the game, Davis and Barber came up clutch once again knocking down two triples apiece. Alabama led 71-66, with 1:57 left in the game.
The Commodores would threaten, but JaMya Mingo-Young and Jada Rice combined to hit six free-throws, securing the 77-71 victory.
Along with Davis’ career-high tying 32 points, Barber and Mingo-Young added 15 and 12, respectively.
With the win, Alabama secures the 11-seed and will face the 14-seed Auburn in the first round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday.
