Alabama Alumni Added As Graduate Assistant

The Alabama Crimson Tide welcomes back one of its own for the 2021 football season. Former Alabama defensive back Shyheim Carter is returning to the capstone to help the football program as a graduate assistant, according to AL.com's Matt Zenitz.

He tried his hand at the NFL and signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Jets after the 2020 NFL Draft. After being cut he spent the 2020 season on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad before opting to return to Tuscaloosa to pursue higher education and a football coaching career.

While at Alabama, Carter was on two SEC Championship teams and one national championship winning team. Carter was a four-star recruit and was considered the No. 5 recruit in the state of Louisiana in his senior season. He was considered the No. 71 overall recruit in the 2016 cycle.

He joins the football program that has had massive turnover on the coaching staff and while he won't be an on-field coach as a graduate assistant, his experience in Nick Saban's system will be a helpful addition to the 2021 staff. Alabama has lost offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, offensive line coach Kyle Flood, running backs coach Charles Huff and several off the field analysts including Butch Jones, Charlie Strong, Mike Stoops and Major Applewhite. There is rumor that secondary coach Karl Scott may be on the way out to Maryland to become a defensive coordinator.
