When you open the bag, the southern goodness hits you. I don’t want to hear about the calories at all. Save that for your mama. I am “all in” for this southern delight.

With each bite, you can taste the history of Alabama. The crunch brings you back to 1923. Delightful tastes with a southern flair. What am I talking about? Just my favorite local food I could snack on every day.

Golden Flake Chips. End! Of! Story!

Originally known as Magic City Foods was established in 1923. It was founded by Mose Lischkoff and Frank Mosher in a basement of a grocery store in Birmingham, Alabama.

According to Funding Universe, “the pair made and sold peanuts, peanut butter cracker sandwiches, and horseradish, but the principal product was potato chips--Golden Flake Potato Chips--so named because of their appearance. The snacks were all made by hand and sold to Birmingham residents living nearby.” By the 1940s, Magic City Foods transitioned to Golden Flake.

My out-of-state guests typically stop at the grocery store before they hit the road to pick up “several” bags of Golden Flake products. I’m not one to gossip, but one friend even has me mail them to him.

My favorite?

All of them. But, if I had to pick just one, Sweet Heat me, please.

Coming in second is the Cheese Puffs.

I consider myself in good company over my love of Golden Flake potato chips. Many locals have told me that our beloved Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant was a Golden Flake spokesperson. He seems like the type of person that wouldn’t cosign anything he didn’t like.

Maybe it’s the history or perhaps the flavor. All I know, Golden Flake Potato chips are something that I could eat every day of my life.
