Jeremiah's Community Garden in Tuscaloosa

I am so impressed with Jeremiah's Community Garden. It is a nonprofit organization in Tuscaloosa. They are committed to “provide fresh, healthful food to those in need, and a place for peaceful reflection and volunteerism, in an effort to teach our children and community the art of gardening and provide educational opportunities for deserving and disadvantaged youth.”

That! Is! So! Amazing! I love the fact that they have a spirit of volunteerism. If you look at their Facebook page, all different types of groups and induvial folks volunteer.

The pandemic has left many of us indoors for far too long. I, for one, can’t wait for the time change to happen. I can’t wait until it is lighter longer in the evenings. For me, that means more outdoor activities.

Gardening is a great stress reliever too. In my opinion, it is also great exercise, and fresh air is a mood booster. Also, there is just something special about watching what you planted grow. I’m all about gardening. My current space doesn’t have much room for a garden. So, I am excited about the opportunities at Jeremiah's Community Garden.

I had a wonderful chat with Bettye Lofton, and she told me that the gardens started about four years ago. Also, an interesting fact is that about 95% of what is grown at Jeremiah's Community Garden is put back into the community. They are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturdays, they open at 9 a.m. and close when the job is done.

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
