What's that saying, variety is the spice to life?  Well, today Meg and I went out to trying something different for lunch, Ezell's Southern Food Express in Tuscaloosa on 15th Street.

As we entered the restaurant, big smiles Oliver Ezell and his staff welcomed us, as we looked over the menu.

I went for the catfish and popcorn shrimp combo, with a side of cheese grits and sweet potato casserole. Meg decided on chicken wings, along with a hash brown casserole and cheese grits.

We couldn't stop there, after hearing Oliver talk about broccoli casserole, fried mushrooms and green tomatoes, our curiosity went into overdrive! Hey, we could always take some of the food to go.

Let me just tell you, everything was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious! The fried catfish featured a light breading with robust flavor surrounding a juicy fillet. The sweet potato casserole gives grandma's Thanksgiving recipe a run for her money. The fried popcorn shrimp, like the catfish tasted so fresh with just the right amount of breading. I did try one of Meg's chicken wings, and thoughts of needing a pile of those watching a game came to mind! What game? Any game, just need more of them!

Talking with Oliver about the Ezell family recipes used in every dish on the menu, I learned that it's all fresh. This includes the catfish coming from either Alabama or Mississippi. The seafood comes straight from the Gulf Coast.

It's clear to see, Ezell's Southern Food Express raises a high bar for fresh handmade quality in what they prepare. Keep in mind a key word in the restaurant's name "express." The food is hot and ready, fast.
