April 7th marks the day in 1933 that people could legally buy, sell, and drink beer after 13 years of prohibition. Today, it's affectionately known as National Beer Day!

On April 7, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's signature repealed the Volstead Act, legalizing 3.2 percent beer. Although it will be another eight months before Prohibition is officially repealed, this was a monumental day for beer drinkers across the United States!

That progression toward total beer loving freedom is conitinuing today in Alabama as beer drinkers look forward to June 1, 2016, the day that HB176 goes into affect allowing breweries manufacturing less than 60,000 barrels per year, to sell at retail up to 288 ounces of its beer per day to a customer for off-premises consumption. That means, you'll be able to get your growler filled at the brewery now! So when you go in to Black Warrior Brewing and have their Lock 17 IPA for the first time and love it, you can get a growler to-go.

To celebrate National Beer Day, here's what local brews I think, would make the 'Ultimate Tuscaloosa 6-Pack.'

DRUID CITY BREWING COMPANY

  • LAMPLIGHTER IPA - From almost day one, this has been on the top of a lot of my lists when talking about Tuscaloosa beer. As with most IPAs, the hops are the most prominent feature in this one with a very tropical and floral feel.
  • DOWNTOWN NORTH PORTER - A tip of the hat the community of Northport, this porter is a full-bodied, malty and has very distinct chocolate and vanilla flavor from beginning to its sweet, rich end. As a matter of fact, Brewmaster Bo Hicks says, "It's like drinking a velvet painting of Elvis."

BLACK WARRIOR BREWING COMPANY

  • BELGIAN RED RYE - I describe this offering from Black Warrior Brewing as complex. There's a lot going on in terms of the "nose" on this one, mouth-feel and aftertaste. You have the malts, spices, Belgian yeast and even get a slight taste of fruit. #SOLID
  • BOURBON BARREL AGED BROWN - At first taste, you'll notice a caramel and roasted malt flavor. Your nose then picks up on a subtle earthy hop characteristic. Black Warrior has combined three kinds of hops to knock this one out of the park.

BAND OF BROTHERS BREWING COMPANY

  • MONK ON THE RADIO BELGIAN BLONDE - A fruity smell coupled with a bready mouth-feel and slightly spicy cracked pepper and coriander finish have made this one of the biggest beers in Tuscaloosa. You gotta try it if you haven't yet. (C'mon, it's named after me so you know I had to include it.)
  • STATION ONE SAISON - The Station One is a little tart with an unexpected sweetness. Full-bodied, mild fruit flavor, maybe cherry and very drinkable but watch out for the ABV!

Now, go out and take a Tuscaloosa brewery tour tonight to celebrate and make yourself 'The Ultimate Tuscaloosa 6-Pack!'
