Sturgill Simpson Has a Role in New Movie ‘The Hunt’ [WATCH]
Come Sept. 27, Sturgill Simpson's growing filmography will include the action thriller The Hunt. The Americana singer-songwriter can be spotted in the newly released trailer for the film.
Per its trailer, the story of The Hunt mirrors that of the 1994 film Surviving the Game. In both movies, wealthy hunters pursue less privileged human prey before the hunted gain an upper hand. Press materials describe The Hunt's storyline as such: "Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they've been chosen — for a very specific purpose — The Hunt." Betty Gilpin (GLOW, Isn't It Romantic) sets the newer film apart by playing its strong female lead.
Simpson, meanwhile, plays one of the hunted. With zero explanation, IMDB lists his character's name as Kid Rock. Other notable stars include Hilary Swank, Emma Roberts and Glenn Howerton.
The Hunt isn't Simpson's only recent film: He plays a rogue police officer in the romantic drama Queen & Slim, due out on Nov. 27. He also appears as a "guitar zombie" and provides the theme song for the recent theatrical release The Dead Don't Die. In 2018, he played Ken Fry in five episodes of the CBS All Access drama One Dollar.
Even Simpson's next album, Sound & Fury, will have a film component. The record will be accompanied by an anime film, created by writer, director and Kamikaze Douga animation studio founder Jumpei Mizusaki and character designer and Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. A release date for the project has not yet been announced.
