Should Tuscaloosa Schools Have Active Shooter Drills?
Parents and educators are faced with a difficult decision when it comes to adequately preparing students for the challenges they face in today's classrooms: do you want your child's school to have active shooter drills? I don't know how I feel about this issue, as I've been struggling with it lately.
I want my child and her school to be prepared in case the worst happens, and I think that schools should take extra steps to ensure students, teachers, and faculty know what to do and when to do it--those precious few seconds could save lives.
But yet... just knowing that my kindergartner has to participate in an active shooter drill makes me feel sick to my stomach.
I hate that this is the reality our children face. I hate that mass shootings happen so frequently that our babies go to schools where these kinds of drills are as routine as preparing for severe weather. What will it take to prevent these awful shootings from ever happening again?
