Possibility Of Severe Storms For Today

Some of our listening areas could experience showers and thunderstorms, with some having the potential to become severe today on Wednesday June 10, 2020.  These weather conditions are taking place ahead of a cold front that is making its way to Alabama.  The timeline for these storms will be between 1 pm and 8 pm.  The main threats are damaging wind gusts and small hail.  Also, there is a Hazardous Weather Outlook for today into this evening for the following counties: Marion-Lamar-Fayette-Winston-Walker-Blount-Etowah-Calhoun-Cherokee-Cleburne-Pickens-Tuscaloosa-Jefferson-Shelby-St. Clair-Talladega-Clay-Randolph-Sumter-Greene-Hale-Perry-Bibb-Chilton-Coosa-Tallapoosa-Chambers-Marengo-Dallas-Autauga-Lowndes-Elmore-Montgomery-Macon-Bullock-Lee-Russell-Pike-Barbour.

From the National Weather Service Facebook page, noted that “a cold front will move through the area today and provide continued chances for showers/thunderstorms, especially for the eastern half of Central AL. A few storms this afternoon could be marginally strong to severe.”

We are now ten days away from the “official” start to summer with the summer solstice on June 20, 2020.  According to the Farmer’s Almanac, “The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice). In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer.”
