All week Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City has said the annual city marathon would happen. This stance came with sharp criticism from those who feel holding the race would be insensitive to those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the event would tie up far too many resources needed for recovery. Those who have been in favor of the race cite it being a symbol of strength and the importance of revenue in the recovery. Late this afternoon, Sunday's marathon was called off by the mayor.
