Lady Gaga Applauds Selena Gomez for Speech About Mental Health Battle
Lady Gaga has come out in support of Selena Gomez days after she was seen tearing up during Gomez's emotional speech at the American Music Awards. While accepting her award for Favorite Female Artist, Gomez admitted to suffering from anxiety and depression issues and encouraged others to seek support.
“I had to stop, because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside,” Gomez said. “I have to say thank you so much to my fans, because you guys are so damn loyal, and I don’t know what I did to deserve you…If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.”
Speaking with KIIS FM in Australia (courtesy of The Daily Mail), Gaga praised Gomez for having the courage to openly talk about her mental health battle, saying that it "was kind of like watching someone rip the shackles off their arms and unchain themselves."
The "A-YO" singer told the radio station: "I found it very brave of her to stand up and speak about [depression]. I know her and I had a kindred excitement for her at that moment."
She also went on to add, "You don't always have to keep up a good face and a good front in order to succeed. What's most important is that on the inside you're OK because it's your heart that matters."
Gaga has long been a fighter in the battle against mental illness. The New York-born singer-songwriter created the Born This Way Foundation, which focuses on anti-bullying and youth mentoring for struggling children and teens.
After the AMAs, Gaga posted on Instagram a heartwarming photo of her embracing Gomez backstage, calling her the "biggest rockstar of the night."
Meanwhile, Gomez returned to social media on Thanksgiving after a three month hiatus by posting a photo with fans and sharing an upbeat holiday message about her year.
"I have a lot to be thankful for this year," she writes in her caption. "My year has been the hardest yet most rewarding one yet. I've finally fought the fight of not 'being enough'. I have only wanted to reflect the love you guys have given me for years and show how important it is to take care of YOU. By grace through faith. Kindness always wins. I love you guys. God bless."
