In an afternoon update, Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said police interviewed witnesses and processed the scene for physical evidence. They were quickly able to identify a suspect - Gredrick Agnew, age 22.

Kennedy said Agnew had been asked to leave a small party or get-together at the residence, and came back with a firearm and shot through an open door while standing outside, injuring three people and killing Ryans.

The VCU obtained warrants on Agnew for Capital Murder early Sunday morning, and Kennedy said the upgraded charge stems from Agnew allegedly shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Kennedy said Agnew fled the scene after the shooting, but VCU investigators and the US Marshall’s Task Force were on his trail and searching for him in multiple counties.

"Late this afternoon Agnew was located in Marengo County and taken into custody," Kennedy said. "He has been committed to the Tuscaloosa County Jail with no bond. He has no bond because the charge is Capital Murder. He will also receive numerous additional charges after consultation with the District Attorney’s Office."

Ryans' murder is the 11th homicide investigated by the VCU so far in 2024.
