Deadly Shooting at Tuscaloosa Apartments Called Self-Defense After Alleged Abuse
No arrests have been made after a deadly Sunday shooting at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex as police investigate claims it may have been a matter of self-defense.
Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said in a Monday afternoon release the unit responded to Aspen Village Apartments, located near near 2201 East 48th Street, on a shooting where Namarcus Giles, Jr. was found dead at the scene.
Kennedy said during the investigation, it was found that the primary residents of the apartment were a man and woman who are siblings.
The investigation revealed Giles had previously been in a relationship with the woman and had allegedly been physically abusive to her in the past.
Kennedy said residents reported that Giles had made threats to come to the apartment during the day on Sunday and later returned to the apartment where he allegedly "broke down the door, entered and began physically assaulting the sister."
Kennedy said as the incident occurred, the woman's brother armed himself before firing his weapon and striking Giles.
Evidence on the scene and statements from witnesses corroborate that account, Kennedy said, and "reported issues of self-defense are present."
The case will be presented to a grand jury for review of any potential charges upon the conclusion of the investigation, Kennedy said.
