It's going to be another scorcher today--and the National Weather Service in Birmingham wants Alabamians to be prepared for the heat.  A Heat Advisory has been issued and will be in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon until 9 p.m. tonight.

High temperatures this afternoon are forecast to reach 95-98 degrees, and coupled with high humidity, heat index values of up to 109 degrees are possible this afternoon and into the evening.

Stay indoors if you can; if you have to be outside today, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Heat stroke is a real threat on hot days; take a look at the infographics from the National Weather Service to learn more about heat stroke and staying safe during times of excessive heat.

ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 9 PM
CDT THIS EVENING.

* TEMPERATURES...92 TO 98 DEGREES

* HEAT INDEX...FROM 104 TO 109 DEGREES

* IMPACTS...THESE HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS WILL ELEVATE THE RISK
OF HEAT STRESS AND HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES SUCH AS HEAT
EXHAUSTION OR HEAT STROKE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE, RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK, THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST
BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME
BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS, STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED
