Future Alabama Golfer Wins U.S. Junior Amateur Championship
Future University of Alabama golfer and rising high school senior Nick Dunlap emerged victorious in the United States Junior Amateur Championship at The Country Club of North Carolina. Dunlap defeated LSU-commit Cohen Trolio, 3 and 2 in Saturday's championship match.
The win qualifies Dunlap for next year's U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., and also gives him exemptions into the next two U.S. Amateur Championships.
To win the championship the Huntsville, Al., native competed in two stroke play rounds followed by a 64-man matchplay bracket. Dunlap secured the No. 3 seed by carding rounds of 68-68 during stroke play.
On his way to the final against Trolio, Dunlap was able to fight off a comeback and win in extra holes in the round of 16, he closed out the quarterfinals with a birdie on 18 and mounted a back-nine comeback against the California state champion, Luke Potter, in the semifinals.
The 36-hole final was no cake-walk for Dunlap either as he was 1-down to Trolio after the 24th hole. Dunlap won holes 27 and 28 to seize the lead for good and close out Trolio on the 34th hole.
Up next for Dunlap will be the U.S. Amateur in at Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh in the beginning of August.
