‘Free Winn-Dixie Groceries for a Year’ Winner Announced

The past couple of weeks, we've been to select Winn-Dixie locations in the Tuscaloosa and Northport area with the traveling registration box.  The prize up for grabs, free Winn-Dixie groceries for a year! A value of $5,200!

Today, a random drawing was held with all of the names entered.  The moment came for me to contact that winner on the phone for a reaction to play on the radio.  The best reaction always comes from the element of surprise, the excitement of the moment.  If you end up leaving a message for someone to call back, you know it will be in their head that they won.

Well, I dialed the number for Roger Gray of Northport.  It was a home phone number.  His wife answered, and I asked when he would be home.  Sure, she questioned what was going on.  So, I had to give some insight or he would never call back.  I told the lady I needed to talk with Roger about a contest with Winn-Dixie.  You know she hung up and thought her husband won the grand prize.  Why else would I be calling about an entry at Winn-Dixie?

Roger did call me back.  Instead of saying he won free groceries, I said he won a package of really nice pencils. The goal, to make the call less predictable. Perhaps, he would buy into that the prize I had for him was pencils worth less than $1, rather than $5k+ in food.  I added a little sizzle to the number 2's, by saying he would be writing like a champ.  He didn't bite on my bluff. The gag was up, and time to make the BIG prize official.
