See the 1938 Grand Opening of the Bama Theatre
Footage from the Bama Theater's grand opening in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 12, 1938 reveals an enthusiastic crowd eager to see 'Bringing Up Baby' and 'Donald Duck'.
The 30's was the era of the South's construction of movie palaces and the Ritz Theater can be seen in the video directly across the street from the Bama.
The grand opening was marked with a parade, the University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band, and a screening of "Bringing Up Baby" and "Donald Duck".
The theater was constructed with funds from the Public Works Administration and included the former City Hall and numerous retail spaces.
Today, the facility is managed by The Arts Council.
