Walt Maddox Explains His Plan For an Alabama Educational Lottery

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox introduced his plan to bring an educational lottery to the state of Alabama if he's elected governor later this year.

Only six states in the country don't offer some sort of lottery for residents and Alabama is among that group, but Maddox wants to change that. He wants to introduce a special session immediately after the swearing in and then have the referendum in 2020.

"Like many Alabamians, I'm tired of educating the children in Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia," Maddox said about a lottery. "We conservatively estimate that we can generate $300 million a year."

Maddox explained that the money would go to four different areas of education impacting pre-K to post-high school during an appearance on The Steve Shannon Morning Show in Tuscaloosa. Listen to that conversation below and tell us what you think about the idea of a lottery coming to Alabama.
