Savannah Woodard Named SEC Newcomer of the Week
Alabama sophomore infielder Savannah Woodard was named SEC Softball Newcomer of the Week by the conference this week. The award was created this season specifically for sophomores who had their 2020 seasons cut short due to COVID-19.
The sophomore from Warrior, AL got on base at least twice in all three games this past weekend against No. 21 Georgia. Her offensive effort helped the Crimson Tide sweep the Bulldogs in Athens on its last regular season road trip of the year.
Woodard went 3-for-6 this past weekend as well as drawing two walks. She tallied four RBIs and scored three runs herself as well as stealing one base.
This was Woodard's first conference award and the third time the Crimson Tide has won the Newcomer of the Week Award. Lexi Kilfoyl won the award twice already in 2021. In total Alabama has won nine player of the week awards this year, three Newcomer of the Week Awards, three Pitcher of the Week Awards and three Player of the Week Awards. The nine awards are the most in a single season in program history.
Woodard was the 2019 5A Player of the Year out of Hayden High School, additionally she was a two-time ASWA All-State honoree and was a 2015 State Championship runner-up.
The Crimson Tide is 39-7 this season and 15-6 in SEC play. Alabama will conclude its regular season this weekend with a home series against Ole Miss at Rhoads Stadium beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m.
