After the death of music icon David Bowie last month, Lady Gaga stayed mostly silent on social media with the exception of a single retweet:

Now, she's slated to honor the man who built the foundation for her stage persona. According to JustJared, Gaga will perform an "experimental tribute" to Bowie at the 2016 Grammy Awards as part of its Lifetime Achievement Award, and the show's Executive Producer explained the choice was almost serendipitous.

"We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year’s show, but when David passed — almost in a single moment — we knew we had to change direction,” Ken Ehrlic told the site. “We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honor David. She’s perfect for it."

Nile Rodgers, who produced Bowie's Let's Dance, will direct the set.

Gaga's also among the show's nominees: She and Diane Warren are up for the Best Song Written for Visual Media award for their work on "Til It Happens To You" from The Hunting Ground.

Kendrick Lamar, Adele, The Weeknd, Tori Kelly, Ellie Goulding and Carrie Underwood will also perform at the Grammys, which will air February 15 on CBS. LL Cool J will host the show for the fifth straight year.
