Justin Thomas Makes Cut With Second-Round 70 at Open Championship

Justin Thomas will play the weekend at St. Andrews.

The former Alabama golfer ditched the joggers for round two at the 150th Open Championship and carded a 70 to make the cut and advance to the third and fourth rounds. The cut line was even par, which is where Thomas was entering play Friday.

Then, he was 1-over through four holes, but eagled the par-five 5th and never slipped below the cut line again. He exceeded his Thursday birdie total by one with three on Friday- they all came on the back nine. Thomas is 2-under for the tournament.

Thomas is tied for 46th entering the weekend, but he's a daunting 11 shots off the lead. Australia's Cameron Smith holds the solo lead but is tailed by Thursday leader Cameron Young, who's down by two strokes.

This time, Thomas made par on 17. He double bogeyed the hole during his Thursday round to fall from 2-under to even par. He peaked Friday at 3-under but carded a five on the par-4 15th. He made par on each of the last three holes.

The eagle on 5 was a turning point for Thomas on the front nine, but the largely stellar back nine punched his ticket to the weekend. He is in familiar territory, as he won the PGA Championship in May while entering the final round seven shots from the lead.

Thomas's Alabama counterpart, Trey Mullinax, will also play the weekend after a second-round 73. Mullinax is at even par for the tournament. He survived three bogeys on the back nine to remain on The Old Course.

Notables to miss the cut include but are not limited to Tiger Woods, who was 9-over through two rounds, defending champion Collin Morikawa, ex-champ John Daly and LIV Golf's Phil Mickelson.

Thomas will start his weekend bright and early for fans in his native U.S.A. He's set to tee off at 5:15 a.m. CT.
