The system overload that resulted in incomplete and inaccurate COVID-19 data being reflected on the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Virus Dashboard have apparently been resolved.

The dashboard provides data and surveillance information about the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) in Alabama.

Persons accessing the dashboard today may have been stunned to see a major increase in the numbers but that is misleading according to ADPH. The state health department, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the vendor providing the dashboard spent considerable time attempting to resolve the issue.

Today (Sunday), the COVID-19 Alabama Dashboard reveals the state has now surpassed 20,000 positive cases with another 334 being counted as probable positives. The death toll has reached 688 positive cases with another four probable.

The national surveillance pipeline became overwhelmed early last week due to a large increase in the volume of COVID-19 laboratory results. That caused a virtual shutdown of the system.

The Alabama Department of Public Health posted this message on the site late Saturday:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), and its vendor have resolved issues related to delays in the national surveillance system. Delays affect the number of cases and tested reported on this dashboard.

As a result of a reporting backlog, this dashboard appears to display sizeable increases in all numbers. The reason is that there has been a lag time in adding some reports.

The national surveillance pipeline became overwhelmed earlier this week due to a large increase in the volume of COVID-19 laboratory results. ADPH staff worked tirelessly with CDC and its vendor to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.

The network was not robust enough to handle the massive increase in test results on the national and state levels. The numbers that were reflected on the dashboard were far behind the actual virus curve.

Predictable, some critics and conspiracy theorist immediately began to claim the problem was not with the system but with officials who are running the system and were attempting to coverup the true statistics. One group claimed the numbers are much higher than being projected. On the other end of the spectrum, was the belief that officials were overblowing the numbers to make the situation look worse and that the whole “pandemic scare” is a massive hoax.

Truth is, according to Dr. Harris, an inability to process the numbers quickly enough led to the issue.
