10 Tips for Staying Safe (And Sane) During the COVID-19 Outbreak
COVID-19 has been dominating the news. What can you do to stay safe (and sane) during this pandemic? Here are 10 tips:
1. Stay Calm
I know this is easier said than done, but take a moment to practice self-care. The latest headlines can be overwhelming, but please know that our radio station is fully committed to keeping you and your family safe and informed.
2. Know What To Do if You Are Sick
If you are experiencing symptoms of the novel corona virus, please seek medical care. It is also recommended that you stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others. Take a look at the CDC guidelines for what you need to do if you are sick.
3. Wash Your Hands
The Center for Disease Control says the single most effective thing you can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Take a look at this post for detailed instructions.
4. Practice Good Hygiene
In addition to washing your hands, you can prevent the spread of the novel corona virus by implementing good hygiene procedures. Cover your mouth when you cough. Avoid touching your face. Skip shaking hands.
5. Don't Be a Jerk
It's tempting to look at headlines touting mass toilet paper or hand sanitizer outages and think it's time to go buckwild in Sam's Club, but again, try to stay calm and think of others. Buy what you need, because if we hoard supplies, people who truly need them will be deprived.
6. Keep Up to Date with the Latest Closures and Postponements
The City of Tuscaloosa has cancelled all events through March 31st. The University of Alabama is extending Spring Break through March 30th, and classes are transitioning to distance learning after the break ends. 7. Think Critically About Your Travel Plans
Are you headed to an area with documented cases of COVID-19? If so, there is a chance you could come into contact with the virus. Check the CDC's travel advisory website for the latest information.
8. Support Your Local Businesses
Many local restaurants and stores are seeing a decline in sales as people stay home to avoid COVID-19. A great way to support our neighbors is to purchase gift certificates to use at a later date.
9. Talk to Your Kids About COVID-19
The CDC has plenty of great resources for starting conversations with your children about the novel corona virus. Have a frank discussion about hygiene. Take the time to explain what's going on so that your kids can make decisions to prevent them from getting sick or feeling scared.
10. Take a Break
It's okay to take a moment to unplug. Binge your favorite show this weekend. Watch some silly YouTube videos. Log out of Twitter for a few minutes--whatever you need to do to get into your comfort zone. It's an important part of your self-care routine, and you don't need to feel guilty about it.
