Women with Updos Look Pensive in Gorgeous New Images From Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’
Sofia Coppola’s remake of The Beguiled is one of the most intriguing movies hitting theaters this year. The original, made in 1971 and starring Clint Eastwood, is based on an 1866 Southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullinan. Coppola is known for her softly-toned, extremely atmospheric, dreamy filmmaking, and that style coupled with a story that’s weird as all hell is going to make for a fantastic film.
I know we’re all way past done talking about the Oscars, but these images (via The Playlist) prove that this movie will at least be a shoe-in for Best Costumes. Nicole Kidman’s dress in particular is major. The Beguiled tells the story of a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell), who stumbles into the care of the women housed in a Southern boarding school. Everything should just be fine and dandy once the women realize this Yankee isn’t a threat to them, but things end up taking a turn, and it’s the women whom Farrell learns he might want to watch out for.
It’s Coppola’s first straight-up “genre” fiction film, and it seems like the director has quite admirably married the gothic Antebellum setting with her trademark dreamy atmosphere. Better keep this one on your radar, because it hits theaters June 23.
