The University of Alabama has named a University of Michigan dean and professor as its next executive vice president and provost, according to a Monday morning announcement.

In a press release, a University spokesperson said James T. Dalton, an academic, inventor and researcher, will fill the role left vacant by the departure of former provost Kevin Whitaker.

“Dr. Dalton brings tremendous depth of knowledge and qualifications to this role,” UA President Stuart Bell said. “He garnered support from many because of his experience at leading public research universities, his stellar academic credentials and his entrepreneurial expertise. His passion for teaching and student success align with our University’s values. He was selected from an impressively strong pool of candidates, and we are honored to have him join The University of Alabama leadership team.”

According to the press release, Dalton is named on more than 300 patent applications and has co-authored more than 300 original abstracts and peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts.

As the dean of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, Dalton helped develop the college's first diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan, redesigned and expanded its bachelor of science program and doubled its research expenditures.

“I’m thrilled to join The University of Alabama and look forward to working with President Bell and the leadership team, faculty, staff, students and alumni,” Dalton said in the press release.

Pending approval by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees, Dalton will begin his work in Tuscaloosa on August 1st.
