The CMX Cinemas on Skyland Boulevard, formerly known as the Cobb 16 Theater, is temporarily closed again after a grand reopening in September as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the movie industry.

The theater quietly closed its doors last week, and a search online for ticket sales showed that the theater would be temporarily closed, although no indication was given when it might reopen.

With low ticket sales, occupancy limits in place and a lack of new films coming out of Hollywood, the theater struggled to pull the crowds it needed to say open. The newest closure comes after months of being shuttered by the initial wave of COVID-19 that forced theaters across the country to close their doors to customers.

Don't count the Druid City's largest theater out just yet, though -- CMX issued a statement Thursday reassuring the public that they aim to reopen just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, and will be featuring both new and classic movies to fill their seats.

"We have been working diligently on safety protocols that will make CMX Cinemas a model, not just for theaters, but for all businesses on how to open responsibly," said Guy Austin, VP of Operations for CMX.

Their "CineSafe" program, a number of COVID-19 precautions put in place when the theater reopened in September, will remain in place. These include but are not limited to mask requirements for all staff and patrons, social distancing guidelines enforced by reduced capacity seating, improved air filtration and the addition of hand sanitizing stations throughout the facility. Customers will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms at the entrance of the theater and CMX is encouraging mobile ticket purchases and minimizing person-to-person contact at the concession stand.

CMX is also bringing back the Cobb's $5 discounts on Tuesdays and introducing a Sunday promotion for frontline healthcare workers who can get a ticket to any show that day free of charge upon presentation of proper ID at the box office.
