Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Police Department teamed up with US Marshals this week to arrest two men accused of breaking into dozens of vehicles in and around Tuscaloosa.

Lt. Teena Richardson, a TPD spokeswoman, said the department began to receive a large amount of reports of automobile burglaries around the first of August and upon investigation, found that many victims had caught the thefts on security cameras.

Richardson said the suspects would check car doors and ransack the unclocked ones, stealing firearms, electronics and other valuables.

Eventually, the Criminal Investigation Division was able to identify two suspects and teamed up with the Marshals to arrest them Tuesday afternoon.

The suspects, 21-year-old Christopher Dewayne Young and Labarry Derrell Prewitt, also 21, were booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail. Young currently faces 9 charges of auto burglary and Preweitt was wanted on 6 warrants for the same, but Richardson said many more charges are likely pending.

She said right now, 73 cases are to be presented to a grand jury and more may follow.

Young's bond was set at $108,000, and Prewitt's at $90,000.

Richardson said the duo is accused of burglarizing cars in areas around Tuscaloosa including Firethorn Drive, Arcadia, Sherwood, Circlewood, Beverly Heights, Windsor Drive, and the Highlands.

Every vehicle entered by these two suspects were left unlocked, Richardson said.
