Tuscaloosa, Alabama Potential Severe Storms August 1 2021

There are two weather situations to be concerned about today, Sunday, August 1, 2021. Those in our coverage areas should be concerned about the heat advisory and the marginal risk for severe storms.

Marginal Risk for Severe Storms

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist notes that “a surface front is bringing a band of rain and storms into the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama early this morning; it will drop southward today. There is a "marginal risk" (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms defined for much of Central Alabama... the main threat will come from strong winds.”

The National Weather Service Birmingham reminds us that “severe storms will be possible this afternoon and evening over most of Central Alabama, mainly between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. Isolated damaging winds up to 60 mph and localized flooding will be possible.”

“Oppressive” Heat Index Values

The afternoon heat index values could reach as high as 109 degrees. These very hot temperatures in combination with high humidity have the potential to cause heat-related illnesses. I have included all the counties under the heat advisory to know if you are traveling in the state or want to advise family and friends.
