‘Transparent’ Removes Jeffrey Tambor From Emmy Consideration
Disgraced Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor may return to Arrested Development, but don’t expect to see Maura Pfefferman at the 2018 Emmys. Reports confirm Amazon has removed Tambor’s name from consideration following allegations of sexual harassment.
Gold Derby confirmed with Amazon that Tambor will not be submitted on the 2018 Emmy ballot, though the actor’s representation has not yet responded. Tambor was nominated in the first three seasons for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series; winning in 2015 and 2016, but losing in 2017 to Atlanta star Donald Glover. Amazon will still submit Emmy consideration for Transparent stars Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker, Judith Light, Jay Duplass, Rob Huebel and Alexandra Billings.
Tambor was accused of sexual harassment by former assistant Van Barnes, and subsequently by Transparent co-star Trace Lysette. The actor doubted his return to the Amazon series, citing a “politicized atmosphere” on-set, but later walked back comments about leaving. Once Amazon made the firing official, Tambor blasted the streaming service for its “unfair” decision, and has since attempted to mitigate the situation in recent interviews. It is unclear if the fifth and final Transparent season will recast Tambor’s role or omit the character altogether.
It’s worth noting that Tambor’s return to Arrested Development also raises Emmy consideration questions, as Season 5’s May 29 release technically makes the cast eligible for 2018. Gold Derby has not yet heard back on the prospect – we’ve reached out as well – but nominations will otherwise be announced on Thursday, July 12. SNL stars Colin Jost and Michael Che will host the ceremony on Monday, September 17.
Tambor is nonetheless scheduled to participate in Arrested Development Season 5 press, so stay tuned for any updates.
