Three Wrecks in Three Days on 20/59 Construction Zone
For the third day in a row, an accident on 20/59 has caused major delays. This morning's accident involved an 18-wheeler that overturned in a construction zone. Here's the official release from the Alabama Department of Transportation:
I-20/59 Southbound closed again due to an 18-wheeler overturning. Southbound traffic being detoured off at Exit 79 to SR 7 (US 11). Recommend traffic exit off at Exit 100 or Exit 86 to avoid traffic backup.Expect both SB lanes to be closed until at least noon, then one lane closed most of day for cleanup. Expect delays. Be alert to workers, equipment, and traffic control at site.
ALDOT is currently working to widen lanes along 20/59; the official project description is listed below with a projected completion date of 2017.
Road and bridge work consisting of grade, drain, base and pave, bridge replacement, signing and concrete barrier rail on additional lanes from south of U.S. 11 (AL 7) to south of CR 32. Delays and lane closures possible. [SOURCE]
It is imperative that drivers slow down in the construction zones, where speed limits are posted at 45 MPH or below. Speeding in these zones or neglecting to pay attention to posted signs and advisories is dangerous, and all motorists are urged to use caution when travelling on 20/59.
