In a press release Target said, “we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”

Target stores have already started removing gender-based labeling in several departments at the suggestion and after much feedback from customers. Now as the debate concerning proposed laws around inclusivity is gaining National attention, the retailer has become one of the first to publicly support the Equality Act and welcome inclusivity as a core belief.

They have also released a new version of their logo which features an added rainbow.

In a recent press release, Target said,

We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.

Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.

Reactions to Target's announcement have been mixed. Comments left on the company's Facebook page have ranged from excitement to disgust.

One customer from Arlington, Texas said, "Dislike Target!! I won't be shopping there any longer." While another said, "I'll be shopping at Target more now."

The American Family Association (AFA) has also started a petition to Boycott the retail giant siting, "Target's policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims."

The Human Rights Campaign website states,

The Equality Act establishes explicit, permanent protections against discrimination based on an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity in matters of employment, housing, access to public places, federal funding, credit, education and jury service. In addition, it would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in federal funding and access to public places.
