Should Alabama Reduce Penalties for Marijuana Possession?
The Alabama House Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would reduce penalties for those caught with marijuana.
al.com reports the bill is set to go before the committee Wednesday. The bill would reduce penalties for possession charges for those caught with an ounce or less of marijuana. Possession of an ounce or less would be a violation and punishable by a fine--a charge less serious than a misdemeanor.
What do you think? Is reducing penalties a smart move for the State of Alabama?
I feel that a reduction in penalties is a great decision. Fining those with an ounce or less actually generates money for the government. We're not wasting money on court costs or for locking someone up in jail for a paltry amount of pot. We're also freeing up time for local law enforcement to crack down on serious crimes.
