Every Monday, Nick Saban spends part of the afternoon showing his players the good plays, bad plays, and ugly plays from the previous Saturday.

The good section highlights what the team did well in the game; individual plays, series of plays, moments of the game that went good for the Crimson Tide.

The bad section focuses on plays that were run incorrectly, maybe a play designed to pick up more yardage but failed. It might include simple mistakes, a turnover or just a simple missed block or tackle.

The ugly section could also be called the disaster section, plays that went completely wrong or injuries. Ugly plays are learning moments for the team. Part of discussing the bad and ugly plays includes thinking through what they could have done differently.

Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi

Good: Alabama came out of the tunnel with a fast start with a Jameson Williams 100-yard kickoff return. Nick Saban called Williams a “dog” in the post-game press conference. Williams’ speed will continue to be a weapon that serves the Crimson Tide throughout the 2021 season. He stretches the field vertically and gives defensive backs something extra to think about when opposing him at the line of scrimmage.

Saban talked about the intensity and was pleased with the energy level of his team. Alabama was able to keep their foot on the pedal for most of the game other than a few minor mistakes. The Crimson Tide also found a much needed rushing attack with Roydell Williams and Jase McClellan getting the bulk of the workload.

Nick Saban now has 100 consecutive wins over unranked teams, if that is not an impressive statistic to you, take a look at Clemson’s loss to N.C. State as the Tigers are now likely out of the college football playoffs as they enter Week 5 of the season.

Bad: When you beat a team 63-14 it is difficult to find many bad parts of the game. Alabama lost the time of possession battle to Southern Mississippi, Alabama will need to flip that in their favor in coming weeks against more difficult opponents. Alabama still needs to clean up a few issues on the offensive line, these mistakes will not show up in final statistics. Saban commented in the post-game press conference that Southern Mississippi’s movement up front gave the Crimson Tide some problems, but for the most part was successful. This unit is making progress, we will know more in coming weeks if unity is going to be a strength for the Crimson Tide.

Ugly: Alabama came into the game ranked 123rd in college football in penalty yards per game, once the stats are computed for Saturday’s game I do not expect the Crimson Tide will make any significant progress in the right direction. Alabama was penalized seven times for a total of 60 yards. Several of these penalties kept drives alive, those did not prove to hurt much against the Golden Eagles but with Ole Miss coming to Tuscaloosa next weekend, there could b a different outcome.

Coming up Monday on The Game with Ryan Fowler on Tide 100.9, we will discuss "The Good, Bad, and Ugly". You will also have a chance to win a framed Daniel Moore print, “ Unrivaled,” which recognizes Alabama’s 18th National Championship, starting at 2 p.m. on Tide 100.9 and on the free Tide 100.9 app.
