Rihanna, Kehlani, Alicia Keys & More Stand in Solidarity for Women’s March [PHOTO]
Hundreds of thousands of people - both men and women - converged in Washington, D.C. for the Women's March on Washington rally on Saturday (Jan. 21). The The grass-roots movement in D.C., as well as affiliated marches across the nation and around the world, was organized to protest the newly incumbent President Donald Trump and echo the support for women’s reproductive rights everywhere.
According to the New York Times, artists like Alicia Keys and Janelle Monae delivered empowering messages to the crowd of women who were holding signs with remarks aimed at both President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence who are both staunch pro-life advocates.
Actress and activist America Ferrera was first to deliver the first salvo at Trump's administration. “It’s been a heartrending time to be both a woman and an immigrant in this country. Our dignity, our character, our rights have all been under attack and a platform of hate and division assumed power yesterday,” she said.
“But the president is not America. His cabinet is not America. Congress is not America. We are America! And we are here to stay," she added.
Singer Alicia Keys recited a Maya Angelou poem and perform "Girl on Fire" at the event. Fellow songbird Janelle Monae, who appears in the inspiring flick Hidden Figures, paid tribute to her late grandmother who was a sharecropper, and her mother and a janitor. “I am a descendent of them, and I am here in their honor to help us move forward and ‘fem the future,’” she said.
