Report: Alabama Could Begin to Sell Alcohol at Coleman Coliseum

Fans wanting to enjoy an alcoholic beverage at the University of Alabama may soon be able to do so.

According to Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News, Levy Premium Foodservice LP, the group that handles concessions at Coleman, has formally submitted an application to obtain a liquor license. This would allow concessions to sell alcohol at men's and women's basketball games, as well as gymnastics.

If accepted, the sales of alcohol could begin in February, depending on a vote of approval from the City Council of Tuscaloosa.

The debate to begin selling alcohol at any sporting event began in 2019. The Southeastern Conference lifted the restriction and left the decision to schools in the conference to decide if they wished to sell alcohol.

Originally in 2019, Alabama said in a statement about the change: "These guidelines will be helpful as we move forward and have future conversations. We have one of the best game-day atmospheres in the country, and we don’t envision making changes at this time.”

Greg Byrne also said in a statement to the Tuscaloosa News: "We've been able to watch the other schools and the reporting we have gotten back from other schools is that alcohol incidents at their games actually go down once they sell because it's a much more controlled environment."
