Police in Tuscaloosa are investigating the case of a man they say posed as an Uber driver, picked up drunk women and photographed them while they were unconscious in his vehicle.

Captain Gary Hood, the commander of the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit, said a Tuscaloosa County Deputy stopped 61-year-old Tommy Wayne Beard in Northport around 2:30 Saturday morning and found an unconscious college-aged woman in his backseat.

Hood said Beard claimed he was an Uber driver taking the intoxicated woman home, but when she woke up, she said she lived just off the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, not in Northport, and that she couldn't remember getting into the vehicle with Beard.

Beard then admitted that he was not actually an Uber driver, but was pretending to be one, going so far as to purchase and display an "Uber" sign for his vehicle.

Upon further investigation, police discovered that Beard had photographs on his cell phone of several college-aged women who appeared to be unconscious in his back seat.

The strange case is under investigation, but Beard has not yet been charged with any crime.

Hood asked anyone who Beard has picked up to contact the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit at 205-464-8690.
