Police are investigating a shooting on Interstate 20/59 in Tuscaloosa Monday morning.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, confirmed the shooting at 8:45 a.m. Monday.

"Cap" Ray Allen, Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa's traffic reporter, told the Thread that the crime scene is on the westbound shoulder of I-20/59 before Exit 71 onto I-359.

Taylor said a 19-year-old was traveling on the interstate when someone opened fire on his vehicle just before 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The victim was struck by gunfire that came in through his windshield, she said.

Taylor said the teenager is a resident of Tuscaloosa County and has been taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Taylor also said a passing vehicle struck the back of an unoccupied police vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the interstate at the scene of the accident.

Traffic is being diverted off the interstate at Exit 73 and being rerouted as investigators process the scene of the shooting and the accident.

The case will now be turned over to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, who will release any updates.

UPDATE, 11 A.M.: The Interstate has been re-opened to westbound traffic, according to Alabama State Troopers.
