The multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the death of a 1-year-old baby in Coker after a preliminary autopsy determined the infant's death was not due to natural causes.

Jack Kennedy, the commander of the VCU, said sheriff's deputies and medics responded to the 15000 block of Savannah Drive in Coker Monday on a medical call. It is not clear if the 1-year-old was dead when first responders arrived or if the child died sometime later, but Kennedy said the VCU began an investigation into the case as a matter of protocol.

Tuesday morning, a preliminary autopsy and medical report indicated that the child did not die from natural causes.

Kennedy said the investigation is ongoing but said he expects developments to happen quickly, and said the VCU would release more information to local media outlets Tuesday afternoon.
