On Average, Smoking In Alabama Costs $1,729,122 Over A Lifetime
How much money did you budget to spend in 2021? If you're a tobacco user, you might want to look at how much you're spending on cigarettes.
I'm sure it's not the first time you heard that smoking is an expensive habit. I don't know about you, but my habits are expensive, just not as costly as smoking.
Wallet hub recently calculated the cost of smoking by state. Alabama's total cost per smoker came out to $1,729,122 over a lifetime. It's unfair to present that info and not talk about how our state compares to others when it relates to cost per smoker. Let me pre-warn you, the comparison results are shocking.
Out of all 50 states plus the District Of Columbia, Alabama ranked 3rd overall when it came to the true per-person cost of smoking over a lifetime. This means that there were only two states that had a lower total cost per smoker than the state of Alabama. Wallet Hub took into consideration the annual cost of a cigarette pack per day, health care expenditures, income losses, and other costs to get their final rankings.
As stated by Wallet Hub, since 1964, smoking-related illnesses have claimed over 20 million lives in the U.S., 2.5 million of which belonged to nonsmokers who developed diseases merely from secondhand-smoke exposure.
Even though Alabama is on the cheaper side of total costs when it comes to smoking, that's still a lot of money. Imagine all you could do with over $1!
